The creation of the global built environment has consumed more than half of our planet’s resources; by the early 21st century, 50% of the Earth’s freshwater resources, half of all energy supplies, and more than half, by weight, of all the raw materials withdrawn from the Earth’s surface. Architecture was also responsible for around half of waste deposits in landfills and 50% of greenhouse gas emissions ( Wilmott Dixon, 2010; Wines, 2016). The mammoth environmental impact of the construction industry is simply incomparable to any other.
