Although ancient civilisations have shown philosophical interest in the human mind and behaviour, psychology became a separate discipline in the late 19th century (Butler-Bowdon, 2007; Wundt, 1904). Since then, psychologists have attempted to define wellbeing or happiness; with almost 40 varying endeavours recorded by the beginning of the 21st century (Alkire, 2002).
