Thomas Day

Thomas is the Material Development Engineer at Biohm. He tests and characterises the technologies Biohm develops and facilitates their improvement. Thomas is an expert in material sciences, holding both a BEng and MEng in Material Science and Engineering from Swansea University.

He honed his skills within the British Board of Agrément (BBA), where he led thermal conductivity testing on a wide range of construction materials. Thomas' work guides the development process for Biohm’s biotechnologies at each of the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) stages.

Thomas sees material development as an emulation of evolution because the technology being developed requires iterative changes within its system, much like an organism evolving in nature. Over time, beneficial adaptations are kept and optimised, whereas detrimental changes are brought out of the system. This method intertwines human-made systems with natural processes, showcasing the potential of a biomimetic approach to development.

Outside of Biohm, Thomas enjoys cycling and the careful maintenance that comes with owning something mechanical.
